This series of paintings was inspired by the medieval allegorical prose 'Psychomachia' by the Latin poet Prudentius. The poem describes the conflict of the vices and virtues in a battle to control the soul. John Afflick has incorporated the ancient game of snakes and ladders around a central image to illustrate this spiritual battle, with the personification of 'Temperance' in the centre. 'Temperantia' is the fifth instalment in his 'Virtues' series. The painting refers to the avoidance of extremes to bring about a sense of calm through balance and moderation. The sun, moon and scales are a reference to the natural balance within the celestial system but also points to the polarity between the potential darkness through over indulgence in an excessive lifestyle and the light serenity achieved through ones basic needs being satisfied. The added biblical scripture also points to the morality of the subject matter and the unusual time on the digital clock refers to Psalm 90:12.
